A laboratory trial of bioaugmentation for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in a Niger Delta soil using Oscillatoria bornettia

Abstract


Bioremediation of crude oil in Niger Delta soil was carried out in a laboratory study by inoculating Oscillatoria bornettia into 350g each of soil treatments artificially polluted with 1.43%, 2.86% and 4.28% v/w of crude oil referred to as T1, T2 andT3 alongside its controls (C1, C2 and C3) which were treated at equivalent pollution concentrations as the treatments but were not inoculated with the alga. All treatments and controls were exposed to tropical environmental conditions for 14 weeks to investigate the potential of the test organism to biodegrade the pollutant and determine its degree of degradation. Results showed higher degree of degradations of 63.4%, 67.1% and 66.4% in T1, T2 and T3 respectively of TPH contents while the controls had lower proportions of degradation of 23.4%, 26.9% and 29.5% for C1, C2 and C3. Also, 72, 18 and 10 plant stands germinated in T1, T2 and T3. Eleven (11) were observed to germinate in C1 while C2 and C3 had no plant germinated on them. pH values ranged between 5.5-6.08 in treatments and controls at both initial and final measurements while nitrate and phosphate contents and cation exchange capacity (TEC) fluctuated in treatments and controls at the initial and final values. However, total organic carbon increased from 2.64 to 3.16%; and 2.39 to 2.81% in T1 and T2 respectively while electrical conductivity generally increased in treatments and controls. Oscillatoria bornettia biodegrades crude oil, therefore, its exploitation in remediation in hydrocarbon spills in field condition should be exploited.
