Antibacterial activity of simple ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis (Family: Ascidiidae) against human pathogens

Antibacterial activity of the methylene chloride extract of the simple ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis against MTCC and clinical isolates of human pathogens from various tracts were assayed by using disc diffusion method. MIC of the crude extract was analyzed. The lowest MIC value of 1 μg/ml was observed for Streptococcus pneumoniae (655), Shigella sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae (109) and Pseudomonas putida (1652) and 10 μg/ml for Staphylococcus epidermidis. The crude extract was highly sensitive in inhibiting the growth of bacteria, exhibiting a broad spectrum antibacterial activity than the selected commercial antibiotics. Maximum zone of inhibition (28 mm) was shown by Pseudomonas putida (1652). The zone of inhibition observed was greater than that recorded for standard antibiotics in all strains. Activities of selected chromatographic fractions to MTCC pathogens and clinical isolates indicated maximum sensitivity to respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary tract followed by wound pathogens.
